Washington, DC – Intelsat, the large satellite services firm with operations centered in DC, said it has successfully launched its new Intelsat 18 satellite late Wednesday from Kazakhstan.

Built by Orbital Sciences, the satellite, expected to be operational in November, will deliver media content to homes throughout the Pacific Ocean region, as well as broadband services to government and commercial users.

The unit will replace an older satellite, and is expected to have a life-span of nearly 17 years.
