Universal Pictures and Eventful Inc. are asking the public which ten U.S. military bases will get a sneak preview screening of Battleship, the action-adventure epic that opens on May 18.

The promotion is a nice little perk for the men and women in service. But meanwhile, of course, it promotes the movie along with showcasing Eventful’s Demand it! social media service for enabling consumers to influence entertainment and live event offerings.

Voting in the “Battle of the Bases” campaign is open now, and everyone is invited to choose which of the nearly 300 bases will get the free screening, which will be held between May 15 and May 17. Eventful will promote the screenings and take care of issuing tickets to the ten bases that get the most votes.

“These early screenings of Battleship allow Universal an opportunity to thank our active duty and reserve service members and their families for their constant sacrifices,” said Josh Goldstine, president of Theatrical Marketing, Universal Pictures. “The spirit of the film is one of assembling the best of the best for a daunting, shared mission. We hope that by bringing together our soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and coast guardsmen with their families, they may enjoy a night out at the movies.”

Universal Pictures describes the movie thusly: In summer 2012, the battle for Earth begins at sea. Peter Berg (Hancock, The Kingdom, Friday Night Lights) directs and produces Battleship, an epic-scale action-adventure that unfolds across the seas, in the skies and over land as our planet fights for survival against a superior force. The film stars Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgård, Rihanna, Brooklyn Decker, Tadanobu Asano and Liam Neeson.

“We’re gratified to work with Universal Pictures to use the power of social media to reward our service members with a chance to see one of the hottest action films of the summer,” said Jordan Glazier, CEO Eventful.
