News Corp. unplugs 'digital native' newspaper The Daily

It’s painful for innovators to admit skeptics were right, but digital native The Daily did so today with an announcement that the newpaper-style digital publication is closing down on Dec. 15. The decision comes almost two years after editor-in-chief Jesse Angelo and publisher Greg Clayman launched the News Corp. initiative.

Angelo, who concurrently has been executive editor of the New York Post, will become that newspaper’s publisher, succeeding Paul Carlucci; Carlucci remains in his other role as chairman of News America Marketing. Clayman will be given responsibility for global digital strategy, digital investments and distribution partnerships, working with chief technology officer Paul Cheesbrough.

News Corp. said experience and lessons of The Daily will continue throughout the corporation. Additionally, The Daily brand, its technology, and some other staff members will continue on as part of the Post, particularly when it comes to engaging audiences via social media and other digital endeavors.

Rupert Murdoch, News Corp. chairman and CEO, issued the following statement: “From its launch, The Daily was a bold experiment in digital publishing and an amazing vehicle for innovation. Unfortunately, our experience was that we could not find a large enough audience quickly enough to convince us the business model was sustainable in the long-term. Therefore we will take the very best of what we have learned at The Daily and apply it to all our properties. Under the editorial leadership of Editor-in-Chief Col Allan and the business and digital leadership of Jesse, I know The New York Post will continue to grow and become stronger on the web, on mobile, and not least, the paper itself. I want to thank all of the journalists, digital and business professionals for the hard work they put into The Daily.”
