o Report Finds iTV to Overtake PCs for European 'Net Access by 2005
London, U.K. -- Interactive television will overtake computers as the
primary way that Western Europeans connect to the Internet by 2005,
predicts a recent report from The Yankee Group. The report says that 81.2
million households will have iTV services, compared with 80.6 million
PC-based Internet households. This compares with a forecast of 24.5
million iTV households against 45.4 million households for PC-based
Internet for 2001. The report cites cable operators' ability to push
digital set-top boxes into homes, and the general lack of interest in
purchasing PCs and setting up accounts with ISPs as reasons for the growth
of interactive television in Western Europe.
