o U.S. to Encourage Chinese Piracy Crackdown During April Trade Meeting

Washington - The U.S. government will pressure China to crack down on specific plants producing pirated movies and music, and also increase the number of legitimate U.S. films that may be distributed in the country each year during an official visit there next month, Reuters reported on Thursday. "Over the next month, we will know one way or another whether they're serious about reducing the piracy that disproportionately affects U.S. exports," U.S. Trade Representative Rob Portman told Reuters. China allows no more than 20 foreign films to enter the legitimate movie marketplace each year, a policy the U.S. says fuels China's pirate film industry. "We'd like to see tangible markers laid down (at the meeting) on the intellectual property front, with commitments on what enforcement mechanisms are being put into place and how we can benchmark Chinese compliance," said Myron Brilliant, vice president for Asia at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, told Reuters.

o Blue-Chip Ads Appearing Alongside Blue Content on Some Video Sites

San Francisco - A number of blue-chip advertisers have begun to see their ads pop up on video sites next to blue content, CNET News.com reported on Thursday. Ads for firms including Apple, AT&T and Comcast have shown up on sites such as iFilm, alongside "mature" video clips with descriptions like, "Lovely girls from Chile show off their upskirt flavor in the school's courtyard." While Apple declined to comment, and a Comcast spokeswoman said the company was unaware of the ad placements, AT&T told News.com in a statement that the company "has advertising policies to ensure our ads are placed in appropriate mediums consistent with the company's brand. It appears the sites in question were part of a large buy vs. a specific target. To date, we've had no complaints or concerns. We are reviewing these sites, and if we determine that it is an inappropriate placement, we will discontinue advertising on those sites." While iFilm told News.com the ads next to mature content were a site glitch, similar blue-chip ads have appeared alongside questionable content on other sites, including VidiLife.com and eBaum's World.

o Study: 50 Million Americans Now Access Their News Through the Web

Washington - Some 50 million Americans now turn to the Internet for news on a typical day, nearly twice as many as in 2002, according to a new report by the Pew Internet & American Life Project. The increase coincides with the rapid growth of broadband adaptation in American homes, Pew said. About 23% of respondents to a December survey said that they get their news from the Web. Among broadband users, however, that number climbed to 43% -- 5% higher than local newspapers and nearly as high as both national TV and radio. Among "high-powered" broadband users -- those who do more online in a typical day than other high-speed users -- 71% said that they get their news online, beating out all other categories, including local TV, radio and national TV, by wide margins.

San Mateo, Calif. - Sling Media, the provider of a service that lets cable and satellite pay-TV subscribers access their home channels from any Internet-connected device, announced on Thursday that it has launched a beta test of a new cell phone version of its service. The SlingPlayer Mobile application, compatible with cell phones and mobile devices running Microsoft Windows Mobile, will be available for a one-time fee of $29 beginning April 26. Users will also have to purchase the company's Slingbox set-top box to connect to their home cable or satellite receiver. The combination will enable users to access their home TV channels on their cell phones, paying only for their wireless carrier's blanket data subscription package.

o Report: Digital Video Recorders Will Be In 130 Million Homes by 2010

Boston - The number of homes worldwide with digital video recorder service will grow from 17.4 million at the end of 2005 to 130 million by 2010, when makers of digital video recorders will see annual sales of more than 40 million units, according to a report from market research firm Strategy Analytics. Digital video recorders are already present in 12% of U.S. homes, and more than half will have access to one by 2010; by contrast, just 2% of European homes had a DVR in 2005, a number expected to grow to 25% by 2010. The firm also projects that sales of IP-enabled will grow from 2.8 million units in 2005 to 20.4 million units by 2010. "To remain competitive, manufacturers and service providers must now make the transition to IP-enabled DVR which will support multi-room television, remote recording capabilities, and access to personal content on PCs such as photos and music," said Strategy Analytics analyst Peter King.

o Game Publisher Majesco Receives Nasdaq Notice Over Rules Compliance

Edison, N.J. - Video game publisher Majesco Entertainment announced on Thursday that it has received notice from the Nasdaq that it is not in compliance with the Nasdaq Capital Market's requirements for continued listing. Specifically, the company does not have a minimum of $2.5 million in stockholders' equity, $35.0 million market value of listed securities or $500,000 of net income from continuing operations for two of the three latest fiscal years. New Jersey-based Majesco said it intends to take steps to bring itself in compliance with Nasdaq rules, but may in fact see its shares delisted, in which case they would then likely trade on the Nasdaq's Over-the-Counter Bulletin Board.
