o Media Delivery Firm Burst.com
Sues Apple for Patent Infringement
Santa Rosa, Calif. - Burst.com, a developer of audio and
video delivery technology, has filed a countersuit against Apple
Computer, alleging that Apple's iTunes Music Store, iTunes and
QuickTime applications, and iPod devices all infringe on Burst.com
patents. Santa Rosa, Calif.-based Burst.com said the filing was in
response to a suit Apple filed in January, asking a judge to find
Burst.com's patents invalid and state that Apple does not violate
them. Microsoft agreed to settle similar litigation filed by
Burst.com, paying a $60 million license fee to the company in March
2005. Burst.com said it is seeking a reasonable royalty from Apple's
allegedly infringing products, and an injunction against further
infringement.

Social Networking Site Facebook Raises $25 Million
Palo Alto, Calif. - Facebook Inc., the operator of a
social networking site for college and high school students,
announced on Wednesday that it has raised $25 million in venture
capital financing. Greylock Partners led the investment round;
Meritech Capital Partners and previous investors Accel Partners and
PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel also participated. Launched in 2004,
Palo Alto, Calif.-based Facebook now claims over 7 million members
for its service, which like similar social networks MySpace and
Friendster lets members create profiles and interact with other
college students online. The company, which has now raised a total
of $37.7 million, said it will use the funds to improve site
functionality.

o Report:
Portable Media Storage Device Market to Reach $25 Billion in 2010
Scottsdale, Ariz. - The worldwide retail value of
"luggable media" -- or, portable media cards and devices such as
Secure Digital, Memory Stick, USB and MicroDisk -- is set to rise
from $441 million in 2006 to more than $25 billion in 2010,
according to a report from market research firm In-Stat. Such media
storage devices can transfer large movie files in less than 30
seconds, and feature copy-protection, encryption and other digital
rights management technologies. In-Stat predicted that luggable
media with 8GB storage capacities will become available by 2008, and
have the potential to move media files throughout the home in place
of a wireless home network. "There will be opportunities for movie
studios and other professional content companies to get extra
revenues by licensing portable versions of their content, as well as
by cross-promoting their content," said In-Stat analyst Gerry
Kaufhold. "The portable versions can be used to drive consumers to
the packaged goods versions such as DVDs. We expect to see luggable
media solutions being tested this year and next, and then hitting
the big time during 2008."

passionate as we are in this space," reads a note on Meedio's
website. Houston-based Meedio's technology allows users to access
their PC media collections via their televisions, as well as
schedule TV recordings from the PC. The company also developed
technology that remotely automates home lighting, appliances and
other devices. Meedio said that company founder and CEO David Brott
and several other executives will be joining Yahoo's Digital Home
