o Nevada Governor Signs Internet Gambling Bill into Law
Las Vegas -- Nevada governor Kenny Guinn on Thursday signed a bill into
law that makes Internet gambling legal in the state of Nevada, raising the
likelihood of court challenges to a federal law that prohibits online
wagering. Nevada legislators have said that they will take steps to ensure
that no minors are allowed to place bets on the Internet, and that
citizens in states that still prohibit the practice will not have access
to such sites.

o EMusic Partners with ISP on Digital Music Subscription Service
Seattle -- Speakeasy.net, an Internet service provider (ISP) that
offers
high-speed DSL connections, announced on Friday that it has partnered with
music download retailer EMusic to offer a music subscription service to
Speakeasy's customers. Under the terms, Seattle-based Speakeasy will
promote EMusic's subscription service to its members, and allow them to
pay the monthly service fee as part of their bill for Internet access,
essentially consolidating two bills into one. Redwood City-based EMusic --
which was recently acquired by Vivendi Universal for $26 million -- offers
over 175,000 songs for download from mainly independent label artists and
the back catalogs of jazz, classical and world music labels. The company's
subscription service lets users download as many songs as they like; a
one-year subscription costs $9.99 per month while a three-month term is
priced at $14.99 per month. A three-month subscription through the
Speakeasy service will cost users $35.98.

o Briefly Noted:
(Tokyo) Yahoo has removed a video game from its Japanese site modeled
after the killings that recently took place at a Japanese school,
MSNBC.com reported on Friday. The game, called "Killing Children at
Ikeda
Elementary School," was reportedly "voluntarily" removed by
the anonymous
person who originally posted it on Yahoo.

(San Francisco) Sony announced that Internet service provider EarthLink
will be the exclusive ISP used for its eVilla, a non-PC device that can
connect to the Internet to access email and browse the Web. For
EarthLink's normal monthly access charge of $21.95, up to four different
users can connect using an eVilla or through any number of PCs in their
home. A CNET article on Friday examines Sony's decision to enter the
difficult market for "'Net appliances," pointing out the
failures of
similar devices released by 3Com, Netpliance and Gateway.

(Santa Ana, Calif.) Audio technology developer SRS Labs said on Friday
that consumer products manufacturer Olympus has licensed its technology
for its DM-1 MP3 player/recorder, which is targeted at business
professionals. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Santa Ana-based SRS
Labs says that its technology improves the sound quality of digital music
by eliminating its "tinny" quality. The 64 MB digital audio

(San Francisco) CNET reported on Friday on Microsoft's role in the
digital
music space, and how the company's rivalry with media delivery technology
developer RealNetworks is influencing the outcome of deals with the major
record labels. Sources told CNET that the labels compelled Seattle-based
RealNetworks to provide support for Microsoft's Windows Media audio
technology in the MusicNet service it is creating with Warner, BMG and
EMI. This would allow third parties the option to use Microsoft's music
technology instead of RealNetworks' in MusicNet-based music subscription
services.

(San Francisco) Wired News on Friday featured an interview with online
magazine Salon.com's founder and chairman David Talbot. Salon is billed as
the last independently-owned online magazine still in operations amidst
the large number of shutdowns among similar businesses, such as last
week's announcement of the closing of Feed magazine parent Automatic
Media. "We expected many publications that were capitalized
sufficiently
to support a professional newsroom, even a small one, something that
prints compelling daily content," said Talbot. "Now, I think
we're the
only independent one around."

(New York) The most recent issue of The Economist features an article
("Big Music fights back") on how the major record labels appear
to be
recovering ground in the digital music space lost to online companies like
Napster, and also tries to predict how consumers will respond to the many
subscription services currently in the works among the labels.

(San Francisco) CNET featured an article on Friday that takes a look at
the growing popularity of the different Napster-like services still
offering free digital music downloads. It singles out AudioGalaxy, a
file-sharing service that has begun to filter out copyrighted songs at the
RIAA's request, but also provides users who search for filtered songs a
link to other sites or services that do in fact offer the blocked song.
