o Report: Global Entertainment &
Media Industry to Hit $1.8 Trillion in 2010
New York - The global entertainment industry has entered a
"solid growth phase," and will increase at a 6.6% compound annual
growth rate to $1.8 trillion in 2010, according to a
PricewaterhouseCoopers report. The Global Entertainment and Media
Outlook: 2006-2010 report forecasts that spending on mobile and
online entertainment will increase three-fold, from $19 billion in
2005 to $67 billion by 2010 -- when the world is expected to count
433 million broadband households and 2.8 billion mobile subscribers.
The Asia-Pacific region will experience the most rapid growth, with
China overtaking Japan as the largest Asian consumer of
entertainment by 2009. The U.S. is expected to see media spending
increase at an average of 5.6% per year, hitting $726 billion in
2010. The firm predicts that Internet advertising sales will grow
from $385 billion in 2005 to $521 billion in 2010, when they will
represent nearly 10% of all global advertising spending. Piracy is
also expected to have a lesser impact on sales, due to industry
trade associations, greater government action, improved economic
conditions and licensed alternatives. "Virtually every segment of
the entertainment and media industry is shifting from physical
distribution to digital distribution of content," said Wayne
Jackson, global leader of PricewaterhouseCoopers' entertainment and
media practice. "As this shift continues, we see more revenue
opportunities for entertainment and media companies."

o Senators, Video Game
Industry Unveil "Commitment to Parents" Initiative
Washington - Major video game retailers and the industry's
Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB) announced on Wednesday
an initiative called "Commitment to Parents," that will aim to
educate consumers about game ratings and enhance enforcement of
store policies on the sale of Mature-rated games. The initiative was
announced at a press conference on Capitol Hill with Senators Rick
Santorum (R-PA), George Allen (R-VA) and Mark Pryor (D-AR); ESRB
president Patricia Vance; Entertainment Software Association
president Doug Lowenstein; and representatives from the National PTA
and retailers and renters of video games including Wal-Mart,
GameStop, Blockbuster and Circuit City. The assembled retailers
agreed to promote ESRB ratings in circulars and on websites; train
clerks on ESRB ratings and game sales policies; participate in two
"mystery shopper" audits each year to track store policy
enforcement; and establish a means for parents to return or exchange
Mature-rated games sold to their minor children. "Parents must be
educated on how video games are rated and what is appropriate for
their children," said Sen. Santorum. "I commend these retailers for
truly stepping up to the plate, and I hope parents will make great
use of this information to make the best decisions for their
children."

o MySpace
Enhances Child Safety & Privacy; Faces $30 Million Lawsuit
Los Angeles - Social networking site MySpace on Wednesday
launched new safety and security features, in the wake of a $30
million lawsuit filed against the company by a 14-year-old girl who
claims she was sexually assaulted by a 19-year-old she met on the
site. The new safety features include heightened security for 14 and
15-year-old members, whose contacts with anyone over 18 will now be
restricted to members who know either their full names or e-mail
addresses. The company also said it will improve its advertising
targeting throughout the site, to ensure minors are served
appropriate ads. Finally, MySpace enhanced privacy settings for all
of its 85 million members, who may now set their profiles as
viewable only to friends in their private network, and restrict
contact to members from within their own age group. "With social
networking becoming a mainstream platform for millions of people to
connect with one another and express themselves, MySpace is
committed to innovating new product features to heighten online
safety, particularly in the area of 14 to 15 year olds," MySpace
chief security officer Hemanshu Nigam. Responding to the lawsuit
from the 14-year-old, which alleges MySpace has "absolutely no
meaningful protections or security measures to protect underage
users," Nigam said the company takes "aggressive measures to protect
our members," adding, "Ultimately, Internet safety is a shared
responsibility. We encourage everyone on the Internet to engage in
smart Web practices and have open family dialogue about how to apply
offline lessons in the online world."

o XM, Sirius
Jointly Developing Radio That Can Receive Both Services
Los Angeles - A joint venture funded by the nation's two
satellite radio providers -- XM and Sirius -- is looking to develop
radios capable of receiving both companys' broadcasts, the satellite
radio blog Orbitcast.com reported. Founded in 2003, Interoperable
Technologies has already completed design on a dual-mode satellite
radio, which is expected to come to market sometime this year.
"Having all XM and Sirius programming available together in a single
radio can be quite the compelling experience," reads a note on the
Interoperable Technologies site. "Or, for those consumers unsure of
which of two great services to commit to, offering a choice between
Sirius or XM -- independent of purchased hardware -- may lower entry
barriers and further accelerate the adoption of this exciting new
media."
