o Sony, Toshiba Abandon Talks on
Single Next-Generation DVD Format
Tokyo -- Consumer electronics firms Sony and Toshiba, which are
leading rival teams developing next-generation, high-capacity DVD
standards based on blue-laser technology, have abandoned efforts to
avoid a potential format war with a unified format, Reuters
reported, citing a report in the Japanese newspaper Yomiuri. Sony's
Blu-ray Disc and Toshiba's HD DVD will both be introduced on new DVD
players slated for release in early 2006, and both companies are
developing proprietary software for their respective products. "Late
August is the practical time limit (to unify formats)," Yoshihide
Fujii, Toshiba's corporate senior vice president, was quoted as
saying in the paper. Previous talks toward developing a unified
format broke down in May. Competing standads are likely to cause a
format war similar to the one seen by consumers between VHS and Beta
in the videocassette player market. As a number of Hollywood movie
studios are supporting either Blu-ray or HD DVD, there is great
potential for consumer confusion. Reuters reported that both
companies agreed that a unified format is still the ideal, and still
a possibility.

o WTO Says U.S.
Can't Discriminate Against Overseas Online Casinos
Geneva -- The World Trade Organization (WTO) ruled last week that
the U.S. must not discriminate against overseas online casinos with
its laws against Internet gambling, establishing an April 3, 2006
deadline for compliance. The island nation of Antigua and Barbuda
filed a complaint with the WTO in 2003, alleging the U.S. violated
international trade laws by preventing U.S. citizens from gambling
on offshore online casinos. "The U.S. has already announced its
intention to comply with the WTO finding," Neena Moorjani, press
secretary for the U.S. Trade Representative, told CNET News.com,
adding that the U.S. response will not weaken the country's stance
on Internet gambling.

Video Game Publisher Square Enix Bids $610 Million for Taito
Tokyo -- Japanese video game publisher Square Enix has announced
an offer to acquire fellow game publisher Taito, for about $610
million, in a deal that would create the region's third-largest game
publisher, behind Nintendo and Namco Bandai. The offer still needs
approval from shareholders, but Kyocera -- which holds 37% of Taito
-- has said it will sell its shares to Square Enix. While Square
Enix is best known for its "Final Fantasy" and "Dragon Quest"
franchises for the PC and game consoles, Taito developed titles like
"Space Invaders," "Arkanoid" and "Elevator Action" for older
consoles, and also creates arcade game titles for the Japanese
market. Taito shares were up 14% on news of the buyout offer.
