o Porn Company Offers $2.4 Million for Napster Trademark, Domain

Barcelona -- Private Media Group, a Spain-based adult entertainment media
provider, announced that it has made an offer of $2.4 million, in the form
of one million of its shares, for the Napster trademark and Napster.com
domain. The offer would need to be both accepted by Napster and approved
by the Delaware-based court handling the company's bankruptcy proceedings.
Private Media said it would use the assets to launch a peer-to-peer
service where users could trade both authorized free and for-pay adult
content. "Along with Hollywood and the recording industry, we have become
increasingly concerned about the level of copyright infringement inherent
in free peer-to-peer file swapping services," said Charles Prast,
president and CEO of Private Media. Prast told Reuters the company is not
interested in Napster's file-sharing technology and that the bid is only
an "initial offer."

o Yahoo, SBC Launch Co-Branded DSL Internet Service

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Yahoo announced on Friday the launch of its
high-speed DSL Internet access service joint venture with
telecommunications firm SBC. The service, available in the 13-state region
served by SBC, will come with features including a customized browser with
a built-in LaunchCast streaming audio player, personal homepage and email
filtering software. Three tiers, based on connection speeds, will be
available: a basic $42.95 per month service offers connection speeds of up
to 384 kbps; a $49.95 per month service promises speeds of 384 kbps to 1.5
mbps; and a deluxe version costing $59.95 per month will offer speeds of
768 kbps to 1.5 mbps.

o Report: Number of U.S.-Based Webcasters Declining

Seattle -- In the last year, the number of radio webcasters has declined
by 31 percent, with U.S. stations accounting for the majority of this
decline, according to a report from Seattle-based BRS Media. The company
has been tracking online radio stations since 1995. The current number of
radio stations broadcasting their signal online sits at 3,940, down from
an all-time high of 5,710 last year. The report also indicates that for
the first time, international stations account for over 50 percent of the
stations online, when a year ago U.S.-based stations represented nearly 60
percent of all stations webcasting. "It has become apparent that the
current copyright problem has had a direct impact on the U.S. market,"
said BRS Media chairman and CEO George T. Bundy. "As long as this
copyright issue continues to hang over the heads of U.S.-based webcasters
we foresee the current decline continuing. However, on the international
side steady growth continues, as many of these markets will likely benefit
from the current turmoil plaguing the U.S. market."

o Liquid Audio Lays Off One-Third of Staff

Redwood City, Calif. -- Liquid Audio, a provider of digital music delivery
technology, announced late Thursday that it will lay off 23 employees, or
about one-third of its staff, in a move to reduce its operating expenses
in preparation for a proposed merger with physical media distributor
Alliance Entertainment. Redwood City, Calif.-based Liquid Audio expects
the cuts to save the company about $600,000 per quarter.

numerous difficulties being experienced in the midst of the Federal
Communications Commission-mandated transition to digital television. In
addition to lack of knowledge among sales personnel for HDTV sets, the
article cites a lack of consumer knowledge of the technology and the high
cost for broadcasters to implement the transition. "We're midstream in a
boat that some say has leaks," W. Kenneth Ferree, chief of the FCC's media
bureau, told The Times. "We're patching the leaks and trying to get to
shore."
