Names PlayStation 3 Launch Titles, Details Online Game Service
Foster City, Calif. - Sony Computer Entertainment America
this week announced its roster of more than 20 launch titles for the
PlayStation 3, which goes on sale in North America on Nov. 17, and
detailed the online and network services the company will offer for
the next-generation game console. Sony-developed PlayStation 3
titles available at launch will include "Resistance: Fall of Man,"
"NBA 07" and "Genji: Days of the Blade," while third-party titles
will include "Marvel: Ultimate Alliance" (Activision), "Elder
Scrolls IV: Oblivion" (Bethesda Softworks), "Madden NFL 07"
(Electronic Arts) and "Sonic the Hedgehog" (Sega). Sony also
announced that basic features of its online network for the
PlayStation 3 will be offered for free. A navigation system called
XMB (Xross Media Bar) will allow gamers to play multiplayer games
across the network; communicate with other players via chat, voice
or video; browse the Web and shop online; store and view pictures
and video; download and listen to music; and purchase game content.
Sony said that first party downloadable games on the network will
cost less than $15 at launch, adding that about a dozen downloadable
original PlayStation titles will be available for $5-$10. Most
regular console titles will cost less than $60. A PlayStation 3 with
a 20GB hard drive will sell for $499, while a premium version with a
60GB hard drive and built-in Wi-Fi connectivity will cost $599.

o YouTube
Removes 30,000 Videos at Request of Japan Copyright Society
Tokyo - Google's YouTube video-sharing service has deleted
close to 30,000 videos after a Japanese copyright society said they
were posted without permission, the Associated Press reported. Among
the items removed were clips from TV shows, music videos and movies
from 23 Japanese companies, Fumiyuki Asakura, an official from the
Japan Society for Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers, told
AP. Asakura added that the Japanese copyrights society may ask
YouTube to introduce a filter to prevent future uploading of
copyrighted clips. The company already employs an audio
fingerprinting technology that identifies low-quality versions of
licensed clips. YouTube recently signed licensing deals with a
number of major record labels for the rights to post their music and
videos. The service was acquired earlier this month by Google for
$1.65 billion. About 8.5 million of YouTube's 72.1 million visitors
in August were from Japan.

o Russian
Download Store AllofMP3 Reacts to Visa, MasterCard Bans
Moscow - Reacting to the blow that came as two major
credit card companies halted payment processing for its
controversial music download store, Russia-based AllofMP3.com called
the actions "arbitrary, capricious and discriminatory," adding that
it may seek legal recourse to reverse the decisions. The site sells
albums for about $2 each, and claims to be legal under Russian law
and hold a valid license from a Russian copyrights society. This
week, both Visa and MasterCard ceased processing payments for the
site. "Visa and MasterCard should immediately re-qualify AllofMP3,"
said AllofMP3 director general Vadim Mamotin. "There is no valid
reason and absolutely no legal basis for the action." Record labels
tried last year to compel Russian authorities to shut the site down,
but prosecutors in Moscow declined to pursue the case. Recently,
U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab said the site is a sign that
Russia doesn't respect intellectual property, and could affect the
country's accession to the World Trade Organization. "It is evident
that Visa and MasterCard made the decision on factors other than
legal grounds since the decision was not based on an adjudicated
verdict by any court in the Russian Federation or, for that matter,
anywhere in the world," AllofMP3 said.

o Swedish
Courts Dole Out First File-Sharing Fines
London - Two Swedish men who uploaded movies and music to
the Internet were convicted and fined by Swedish courts this week,
according to The Register, which cited a report from Swedish site
The Local. In the first case in Sweden where someone was fined for
music file-sharing, a 44-year-old man from Boras paid an undisclosed
sum for making songs available from artists including the Eurythmics
and Roxette. In a separate case, a 32-year-old man from Norrkoping
was convicted and fined for posting a Swedish film online. The cases
are of note because both convictions came as a result of supporting
evidence consisting of an IP address linked to a file-sharing
network, which a Swedish judge in a case in September ruled was
insufficient to prove guilt.

o MacArthur
Foundation Commits $50 Million to Study Digital Learning
New York - The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur
Foundation this week announced plans to commit $50 million over five
years to fund research and innovative projects focused on
understanding the impact of the widespread use of digital media on
youth and how they learn. "This is the first generation to grow up
digital -- coming of age in a world where computers, the Internet,
videogames, and cell phones are common, and where expressing
themselves through these tools is the norm," said MacArthur
president Jonathan Fanton. "Given how present these technologies are
in their lives, do young people act, think and learn differently
today? And what are the implications for education and for society?
MacArthur will encourage this discussion, fund research, support
innovation, and engage those who can make judgments about these
difficult but critical questions." The Foundation has already funded
exploratory grants for researchers at several universities, and
plans to publish six books in 2007 representing leading research and
thinking on a range of digital media and learning topics.

o Red Hill
Group Launches Virtual Political Stock Market
Gaithersburg, Md. - Red Hill Group said that it has
launched a website giving political aficionados the chance to
express their opinions about who will win in November by buying and
selling candidates in a virtual stock market. The site,
CasualObserver.net, allows registered users to participate for free,
sharing their opinions about who will win more than 70 of the most
competitive mid-term Senate, House and governor's races across the
nation. Users can "invest" in the candidates they deem most likely
to win or lose, then follow the results online with real-time
updates on prices and portfolio values. The site, which went live in
September, recently launched a contest, awarding an iPod Nano to the
top trader at the market close on Nov. 7.
