San Francisco – Over 60% of
registered Twitter accounts come from outside the U.S., Matt Sanford, the company’s
lead engineer on its international team, wrote in a blog post.

"Twitter’s
first users were the early employees and their friends, largely based around
our offices in San Francisco," wrote Sanford.

"Today we
are a global information network, with a robust developer ecosystem and a
website available in six languages."

The company said that it saw a 50%
boost in signups from Spanish-speaking countries when it made Twitter.com
available in Spanish back in November, and saw Spanish-language signups spike
1,200% in the wake of the Chilean earthquake.

Meanwhile, signups in India
have increased nearly 100% since the beginning of 2010, which the company
credited to some popular wired politicians and Bollywood mega-stars.
