Apple (NASD: AAPL) sold an estimated 1.5 million units of its iPhone 4 on its first day on
sale yesterday, according to analyst firm Oppenheimer, Reuters reports. The
sales figure tops previous launch-day sales of half a million iPhone 3GS units
in 2008.

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster estimated that 77% of iPhone 4
sales on Thursday were upgrades from previous iPhone models. This compares with
previous estimates of 56% of iPhone purchasers in 2009 and 38% in 2008.

While
sales of the iPhone 4 appear to be brisk, Apple acknowledged that owners can
affect the reception the phone gets depending on how they hold it in their hand.

"Gripping any phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna
performance with certain places being worse than others depending on the
placement of the antennas," the company said in a statement to PC World,
which reported on the issue.

"This is a fact of life for every wireless
phone. If you ever experience this on your Phone 4, avoid gripping it in the
lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the
metal band, or simply use one of many available cases."

  1. “Admits antenna issue” is a fairly misleading headline…

they admit it is a problem for all cellphones. that’s not much of an admission.

not trying to be an apple apologist here, i’m just saying… saying yeah, every phone in the world does this to some extent, and so yeah, this one does too. … isn’t really the same thing as “admitting antenna issue”

  2. I just bought an unlocked iphone 4 recently and I’m not experiencing this antenna problem. Maybe it happens only if you hold it in a certain way?
