San Francisco – The National Music Publishers Association
(NMPA) told Apple (NASD: AAPL) that it must negotiate licenses with publishers and
songwriters before it increases the length of streaming song samples at its
iTunes Store from 30 to 90 seconds, CNET News.com reported.

Sources told CNET
Apple had already reached agreements with the major labels for the lengthier
samples, and notes it’s not clear exactly why Apple didn’t launch the new
feature.

NMPA president and CEO David Israelite confirmed for CNET that Apple
never approached the organization about a new deal.

But, Israeilte added that the NMPA has "not
raised any substantive objection to the concept [of longer song samples] and
look forward to a productive discussion with Apple if they wish to pursue
this."
