Provo, Utah – Ancestry.com, an online family history
resource, said on Thursday that it has acquired iArchives, the operator of a
digitization service and history site Footnote.com, for $27 million.

The
iArchives service has to date digitized more than 65 million images of American
historical records.

Utah-based Ancestry.com, which counts 1.3 million paying
subscribers, said that Footnote.com is complementary to its online family
history offering.

"By promoting Footnote to our Ancestry audience, we hope
to expand its reach among researchers who care about early American
records," said Ancestry president and CEO Tim Sullivan.

"iArchives
also brings outstanding image-viewing technology and content digitization
capabilities that will improve our leadership position in bringing valuable
historical records to the market."
