Cupertino, Calif. – Apple (NASD:  AAPL) has filed patent infringement
litigation against Motorola (NYSE:  MOT), alleging the company’s Droid smartphone infringes
on Apple’s patents for its multi-touch display and other user interface
elements. The lawsuits from Apple targeting Motorola come after Motorola sued
Apple in October, claiming infringement of 18 mobile-related Motorola patents.

Motorola also filed a complaint against Apple with the International Trade
Commission.

Apple has filed similar patent infringement claims against Nokia
and HTC, while Motorola has also been sued by BlackBerry maker Research in
Motion (RIM).

It’s likely that these lawsuits will drag on for some time, but
will ultimately be resolved with cross-licensing agreements rather than a ban
on sales of any of the affected devices.
