New York – News Corp. (NYSE:  NWS) chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch on
Wednesday unveiled The Daily, the company’s new iPad-only daily news
publication. "New times demand new journalism. So we built The Daily
completely from scratch — on the most innovative device to come about in my
time — the iPad," said Murdoch. The Daily will sell for 99 cents per
week, or $39.99 for an annual subscription, billed directly to an iPad owner’s
iTunes account.

It will publish up to 100 pages focused on news, sports, gossip
and celebrity, opinion, arts and life, and apps and games.

Subscribers will be
able to leave comments on stories either in written or audio form. Launch
advertisers include HBO, Macy’s, Paramount, Pepsi Max and Verizon.

"The
magic of great newspapers — and great blogs — lies in their serendipity and
surprise, and the touch of a good editor. We’re going to bring that magic to
The Daily — to inform people, to make them think, to help them engage in the
great issues of the day," Murdoch continued.

"And as we continue to
improve and evolve, we are going to use the best in new technology to push the
boundaries of reporting."

  1. Its got a pretty good price point but I still think its going to ultimately fail. The numbers of ipad owners willing to buy it probably isn’t going to be large enough to support the cost. If they expand to other platforms like Web OS and Android as their tablet markets come online it could help growth. I still know people who buy newspapers for the classifieds and coupons. The Daily could partner with Craigslist for local classified support and a coupon site as well. If they want to be a complete newspaper experience they could try to be more local in those ways.
