San Francisco – Former MSNBC host Keith Olbermann said on
Tuesday he will join Current TV, the San Francisco-based public affairs network
co-founded by former Vice President Al Gore. Olbermann will serve as executive
producer and host of a new nightly primetime news and commentary show, to
launch later this year, and also hold the title of chief news officer. In
addition, he will receive an unspecified equity stake in the company.
"Nothing is more vital to a free America than a free media, and nothing is
more vital to my concept of a free media than news produced independently of
corporate interference," said Olbermann.
The move could prove to be a boon
for five-year-old Current, which has struggled over the past five years with
low ratings and is available in only 75 million homes.
The popular Olberman
abruptly left MSNBC last month after he was suspended by the network for making
political contributions to candidates in Kentucky and Arizona.
