Beijing – Chinese multiplayer game publisher Perfect World announced on Tuesday that it will acquire Atari’s Cryptic Studios for about $50 million.

Cryptic Studios has developed massively multiplayer titles including “City of Heroes,” “Star Trek Online” and “Neverwinter Nights.”

“This strategic acquisition will add attractive game titles to our portfolio, which will help us further penetrate into the U.S. and global online game markets,” said Perfect World chairman and CEO Michael Chi.

“More importantly, Cryptic Studios’ highly reputable development team and its technology platform will further strengthen our well-established R&D capabilities.”
