Comedy Central and Omnigon Communications have gone live with a new Stand-Up Showdown Facebook Application, which among other things gives viewers a social platform for choosing which comedians will get a little career boost from the Viacom channel.

It was launched to coincide with Comedy Central’s annual Stand-Up Month, which also is using the Twitter hashtag #ccstandup.

Each week the app lets fans browse through featured comedians and vote for their favorite. Each Friday during the campaign, Comedy Central will reveal that week’s top fan choices. In the meantime, the app gives comedians a new opportunity to promote their work and reach a larger audience.

“One of the main reasons why we’re so focused on these social platforms is that comedy lives on these social platforms,” said Steve Grimes, Comedy Central’s senior vice president of Digital Media.

At the end of the promotion, the app will morph into a frequently changing showcase for one featured comedian at a time, along with a set of comedians that person is following on Twitter, encouraging continuing and deeper engagement.

Omnigon and Comedy Central previously worked together on the second screen experience that accompanied The Charlie Sheen Roast.
