Ted Cohen, Managing Partner
TAG Strategic
Integrating his widespread digital authority in music, mobile, IPTV and product & service development, Ted Cohen is the Managing Partner of TAG Strategic. In an industry that’s been slow to embrace change, Cohen is the exception to the stereotypical music-exec rule. Of course, when you start a career on the road with Alice Cooper and Van Halen, you’re more primed for the unexpected. During that time, EMI led the industry by embracing and exploiting new technologies and business models such as digital downloads and online music subscriptions, custom compilations, wireless services, high-definition audio and Internet radio. In addition to seeking out, evaluating and executing business opportunities for the company on a global basis, Cohen served as both a strategist and key decision-maker for EMI’s global new media and anti-piracy efforts. He worked to establish company-wide digital policies, which have provided EMI’s artists and labels a substantial advantage in the digital music arena. Prior to his role at EMI, Cohen served as Executive Vice President of Digital Music Network Inc., where he co-founded and served as Chairman of the groundbreaking Webnoize conferences. Cohen also led two highly successful new media consulting operations, DMN Consulting and Consulting Adults, attracting clients such as Amazon.com, Microsoft, Universal Studios, DreamWorks Records, Liquid Audio, Wherehouse Records/Checkout.com and various other entertainment, technology and new media organizations. Cohen also held senior management positions at both Warner Bros. Records and Philips Media. A 30-year industry veteran, Cohen was recently elected Chairman of the Mobile Entertainment Forum Americas board, and currently chairs MidemNet, an international music/technology conference convened in Cannes each year. Oxford University Bans Streaming Music Service Spotify
London – Britain’s Oxford University has banned students
from using the streaming music service Spotify, having classified it as a
peer-to-peer application and thus prohibited on campus networks, The Register
reported, citing student paper Cherwell. The Register notes that Spotify’s use
of peer-to-peer technology is actually intended to reduce the bandwidth load on
service providers, by caching songs locally on users’ computers rather than
delivering many individual streams of the same track from a single, central

Consumer Group: 25K Ask DOJ to Block Ticketmaster-Live Nation
Washington – A consumer advocacy group called
TicketDisaster.org announced on Tuesday that nearly 25,000 consumers have
directly contacted the U.S. Justice Departent, to urge the antitrust division
to block the merger of Ticketmaster (NASD: TKTM) and concert promotion giant Live Nation (NYSE: LYV).
"Consumers
can spot a raw deal when they see one, and this merger is exactly that — a
combination of two market behemoths that would result in higher prices, more
outrageous fees, and less choice," said Sally Greenberg, executive director
of the National Consumers League, a founding member of the coalition.
Other backers
of the campaign include the "American Antitrust Institute, Consumer
Action, Consumer Federation of America,
I.M.P. Productions Chairman Seth Hurwitz (representing independent venue

Amid Controversy, Google Delays Cell Phone Debuts in China
Beijing – Google (NASD: GOOG) has
postponed the planned launch of several new Android-based mobile phones in China, the
latest move in the aftermath of a China-based attack on its Gmail service,
according to published reports. Since the attack on the Gmail accounts of
Chinese human rights activists, and some journalists, Google has said it is
considering exiting China
completely.
The company has stopped censoring search results in China — which
it, along with Yahoo and other search engines, have done to satisfy demands from
the Chinese government.
Now, Google has delayed the release of two cell phones
from Motorola and Samsung — which utilize the company’s Android mobile
operating system — that were scheduled for deployment this week by China Unicom.
The Associated Press reports that Google is in talks with the Chinese
government, and that the outcome of those talks over the next few weeks could
determine whether the two cell phones are released in China.

Microsoft, ESPN in Talks on Live Sports Streaming to Xbox 360
New York
– Microsoft (NASD: MSFT) has held "in-depth" talks with Disney-owned
(NYSE: DIS)
ESPN on the
possibility of streaming live sporting events to its Xbox 360 video game
console, The New York Times reported.
The deal would reportedly see ESPN charge
Microsoft a per-subscriber fee for access to the live streams and other
content, which may include some interactive games, people close to the talks
told The Times.
To date, Microsoft has sold over 39 million Xbox 360 consoles,
around 20 million of whom also use the Xbox Live online service each month to
play games online, as well as watch a growing stable of movies, TV episodes and
Web videos.
The Times noted that Xbox Live’s average of more than 1 million
concurrent users, rising to as high as 2.2 million at peak periods — rivals
ratings on cable channels like Cartoon Network or TBS — but cautioned that
many on Xbox Live are playing games, not watching video.
One of The Times’
sources noted that a deal between Microsoft and Disney "was not
imminent."
