Irish Record Labels Seek "Three-Strikes" P2P Policy for Mobile

0

Los Angeles – After a
successful lawsuit against ISP Eircom that resulted in the introduction of a
"three-strikes" policy that disconnects repeat file-swappers, the
Irish Recorded Music Association (IRMA) has taken legal action to compel the
implementation of similar policies by mobile network operators O2 and 3 Ireland,
according to published reports. The High Court of Ireland last month approved
the legality of a graduated response to curb file-sharing, where a user’s Internet
connection is suspended — for between a week and a year — after repeated
warnings to stop the activity.

Billboard reports that IRMA is also in talks
with local ISPs Vodafone and Meteor on introducing three-strikes, while UPC is
set to challenge the protocol at a High Court hearing next month.

At least one
of the new mobile network targets appears ready to challenge IRMA as well.

"O2
is currently reviewing the issue, but does not believe it is legally liable in
relation to illegal filesharing activities that any of its customers might seek
to engage in," the company told the Irish Times.

KCRW's Live Performance with Nas and Damian Marley

0

Nas and Damian Marley by Jeremiah GarciaLast night, I had the privilege of attending an intimate live performance session hosted by KCRW with Hip-hop icon Nas and Damian ‘Jr. Gong’ Marley.  The show was simply incredible featuring songs off their new album “Distant Relatives” as well as an on-stage discussion with Nas, Marley and DJ Garth Trinidad. Trinidad asked the two about the roots of their relationship, the connection between hip hop and reggae and growing up with fathers who have had such a strong influence on global music (Nas’ father is Olu Dara, a global multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and lyricist and Damian is the youngest son of Bob).

Seeing these two acclaimed artists on stage at the same time in such a small and intimate setting was a special treat. In an age of often over-produced music, their music was alive and organic from the core combining the best of hip hop and reggae. If you haven’t checked out this album, it’s one you shouldn’t miss.

Last night’s session was recorded at Apogee’s Berkeley Street Studio, the private studio of legendary producer Bob Clearmountain (if you don’t know him, he’s worked with the Stones, Springsteen, and Bowie. He even mixed “We Are Family!”) who engineered the session. It will air on Trinidad’s show next Thursday, June 3 at 9pm PST. It will also be available in the archives at www.kcrw.com.

Report: Next Apple TV to be iPhone-Sized, Cost $99

0

Los Angeles
– An anonymous tipster tells Engadget that the next iteration of Apple’s (NASD: AAPL)
streaming media server, Apple TV, will abandon the set-top box shape in favor
of a smaller device based on the iPhone that will sell for $99, down from the
$230 price tag of the current model.

Engadget said its tip was "confirmed by
a source very close to Apple."

The new Apple TV will reportedly feature
just two ports, for power and video output, and may focus on cloud-based
storage, streaming 1080p HD content to televisions.

The report states that
Apple is unlikely to announce the new device at its upcoming WWDC event, at
which it is expected to focus on a new iPhone.

Google Closes $750 Million Acquisition of AdMob

0

Mountain View,
Calif. –
Google (NASD:  GOOG) announced on
Thursday that it has closed its $750 million acquisition of mobile advertising
form AdMob. The deal initially raised many antitrust concerns, but ultimately
the Federal Trade Commission last week gave its approval of the deal — citing Apple’s
recent iAd mobile platform launch as evidence that it won’t give Google an
unfair advantage in the nascent sector.

"It’s clear that mobile
advertising is becoming a much larger part of our clients’ and partners’
strategies and with this acquisition, it’s now a central part of our own
business," Susan Wojcicki, Google’s vice president of product management,
wrote in a blog post.

"In continuing to invest in this highly competitive
area, we’ll be bringing together our technology, resources and expertise in
search advertising with AdMob’s innovative solutions for advertising on mobile
websites and in mobile applications."

Time Warner Cable Fights Subpoenas in File-Sharing Cases

0

New York
– Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) is fighting requests to turn over the identities of some
1,000 subscribers alleged to have illegally downloaded films from BitTorrent,
arguing mainly that the task is too burdensome and could hamper its efforts to
comply with law enforcement requests, according to published reports.

A group
of independent film producers hired U.S. Copyright Group to file suit against
tens of thousands of alleged illegal movie downloaders, using the same tactic
from the recording industry’s legal campaign — namely, filing subpoenas with
ISPs to turn over the identities of suspected infringers based on their IP
addresses.

Time Warner Cable told the court that it doesn’t have the resources
to comply.

"Given its current staffing, it would take TWC nearly three
months of full-time work by TWC’s subpoena compliance group, and TWC would not
be able to respond to any other request, emergency or otherwise, from law
enforcement during this period," the company said.

"TWC has a
six-month retention period for its IP lookup logs, and by the time TWC could
turn to law enforcement requests, many of these requests could not be
answered."

The company said it can process, at most, 28 subpoena requests
per month.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that U.S. Copyright Group responded to
Time Warner Cable’s argument by saying the move "exposes [the company]
itself to a claim for contributory copyright infringement."

– The domain and source code for Newzbin, the Usenet media file indexer that
was ordered shut down on copyright charges earlier this year, has been sold to
a Seychelles-based company called WCIS Limited, TorrentFreak reports. The move
mirrors one made by The Pirate Bay, whose operators reportedly sold the domain
to a Seychelles-based company amid their ongoing legal battle in Sweden. The
ex-director of Newzbin reportedly sold the domain and code to help pay
creditors.

former CEO of ad-supported music download service SpiralFrog and current consultant
to ad-supported peer-to-peer download service Qtrax, has ended his relationship
with Qtrax after three years, Digital Music News reported.
Kent
left SpiralFrog in 2006, before the company that had raised millions folded,

the major labels, and miss a number of launch dates. Kent told CNET his new ventures
won’t involve digital music.
