Palo Alto, Calif. – Facebook has acquired most of the
technology and assets of online file storage and sharing service Drop.io.
Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Founded in 2007, New
York-based Drop.io lets users upload files to its servers, and then share those
files via private links.
The company will discontinue its service for all users
as of Dec. 15, and encouraged users to download all of their account data
before then.
Drop.io said that more than 10 million files have been uploaded to
its service.
The company had raised nearly $10 million in venture capital, from
backers including DFJ Gotham Ventures, RRE Ventures and Rose Tech Ventures.
