Shanghai – Apple (NASD: AAPL) says that audits of its manufacturing
partners’ facilities in China found labor, safety and other violations in 2010,
including underaged workers and mishandling of dangerous chemicals, the
Associated Press reports.
The report on 127 facilities unearthed 91 underaged
workers, including 42 at a factory with which Apple has since stopped doing
business.
In another finding, dozens of workers were poisoned by mishandling of
chemicals at Wintek, an Apple supplier; in total, Apple is ordering changes
related to hazardous chemicals at 80 suppliers.
The company is also requiring
its manufacturing partners to reimburse $3.4 million in excess charges by
employment agencies hired to source migrant workers from neighboring Asian
countries.
