Machinima is getting an influx of funds from Google and other investors, according to an exclusive report by All Things D that also said the round is expected to raise more than $30 million and is due to close within a month.
This would be the first time Google has made an investment like this. Google has spent at least $100 million to attract content creators to YouTube, but that money is for production and is distributed in deals that require repayment through ad sales. All Things D said this pending investment would be in return for an equity stake.
That level of investment would give the company a $190 million post-funding valuation.
Machinima politely, quickly but definitely declined to comment when contacted by Digital Media Wire.
The company, which targets video game players and fans of the related lifestyle, in March had more than 154 million unique visitors who collectively watched 1.52 billion videos. Machinima’s YouTube channel, which currently is its primary method of distribution, has 4.5 million subscribers.
