Beijing – Google (NASD: GOOG) users in mainland China are unable to
access the search service through a new search "suggestions" service
the company launched this week in a bid to retain its Chinese website operator
license.
Google stopped re-directing all mainland China-based users to a Hong
Kong-based search site — which offered uncensored search results — earlier
this week.
The company said it decided to stop re-directing Chinese users to Hong Kong because it was
"clear from conversations we had with Chinese government officials that
they find the redirect unacceptable."
The current situation would suggest
the Chinese government is also dissatisfied with Google Suggest.
"It
appears that search queries produced by Google Suggest are being blocked for
mainland users in China. Normal searches that do not use query suggestions are
unaffected," Google said in a statement.
