Cupertino,
Calif.
– The iPad, Apple’s (NASD:  AAPL) highly
anticipated new tablet computer, will officially hit store shelves next month,
the company announced on Friday. The company said that basic Wi-Fi models will
be available on April 3, while enhanced Wi-Fi and 3G models will be available
in late April. Customers will be able to pre-order both versions from Apple’s
website beginning next Friday.

The news comes five weeks after Apple first
unveiled the product, which resembles a larger version of the iPod touch, featuring
a 9.7-inch touch screen and an iPhone operating system.

The device, which will
sell for $499-$829, allows users to wirelessly browse the Web, download apps,
watch video and, in a step up from Amazon’s Kindle, download and view print
publications in full color.

The half-inch thick device, which weighs 1.5
pounds, also boasts a 10-hour battery and up to 64 GB of storage.

  1. Hopefully Apple has thought it through and realized that in addition to competing with other established e readers, this can potentially eat up into their very own iMac market, at least in the short term.

  2. Why are people being too hard on the iPad? What was everyone expecting? Everyone seems to be talking about it. Of course it is going to have some hiccups at the beginning, at the end of the day it’s a computer. I think it’s a great invention and a good step forward. Most of those complaining about it probably don’t even own one. The Apple tablet will be a great tool for doing video search and playing. Most of the video sites listed on http://www.dozenvideo.com such as youtube and vimeo can be accessed by the iPad and I think it’ll improve the ultimate viewing experience.

  3. So no sign of a date for international order of the iPad. Shame. With the way the currency is going, I doubt that its going to be as cheap as we were first hoping in the UK
