Washington
– Technology giant Google (NASD: GOOG) spent $1.3 million on lobbying efforts during the
first quarter, up 57% over the same period in 2009, according to DC-based
consumer advocacy group Consumer Watchdog, citing public records filed on
Tuesday.

"Google is relatively new to the influence-peddling game, but
they’re now one of the highest rollers in Washington," said John Simpson with
Consumer Watchdog.

Lobbying disclosure forms filed with the Senate Office of
Public Affairs include both the amount that the company spent itself and what
it paid to outside firms to lobby on its behalf.

The figure is up from the
$880,000 that Google spent in the first quarter of last year, and the $1.12
million that it spent in the fourth quarter.
