Alibaba CEO David Wei
told The Journal that Soros bought the shares during the third quarter, but
declined to say how many shares were purchased.
"Last summer, Soros came
to visit us to see our operations and met with our staff," Wei told The
Journal.
Other shareholders include Yahoo, which holds a 39% stake in Alibaba
Group, Alibaba.com’s parent company.
Alibaba has said it wants to repurchase
Yahoo’s stake, but the company has indicated it does not wish to sell.
