Los Gatos,
Calif.
– Online DVD rental
service Netflix (NASD: NFLX) announced on Tuesday that it will use Microsoft’s (NASD: MSFT) digital
rights management (DRM) technology to secure content delivered to Netflix-ready
devices and applications. Microsoft’s PlayReady technology and Protected
Interoperable File Format (PIFF) — which Netflix already uses to secure
instant streaming to PCs and Macs — will now also be used on non-computer
devices able to stream Netflix content, expected to begin shipping this summer.
