Palo Alto, Calif. – Flipboard, the developer of a
"social magazine" format for Apple’s iPad, has raised $10.5 million
in funding, acquired social data mining firm Ellerdale, and launched its
application to the public.

Flipboard creates a personalized magazine for the
iPad by pulling photos, updates and stories and videos posted to Facebook and
Twitter by a user’s friends.

The funding for Flipboard, which was founded
earlier this year, came from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Index
Ventures, as well as Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, Facebook co-founder Dustin
Moskovitz, Peter Chernin, Ron Conway, Alfred Lin, Peter Currie, Quincy Smith
and Ashton Kutcher.

Flipboard said that technology from Ellerdale will become
the relevancy engine for the next release of its application.
