Mountain View, Calif. – Google (NASD: GOOG) announced on Thursday that it
will discontinue development on Google Wave, its hybrid email and real-time
social messaging service, citing a lack of interest from users.
"Wave has
not seen the user adoption we would have liked," the company said in a
blog post.
"We don’t plan to continue developing Wave as a standalone
product, but we will maintain the site at least through the end of the year and
extend the technology for use in other Google projects."
The company noted
that several features of Wave — including drag-and-drop and character-by-character
live typing — are also already available as open source code.
