Waterloo, Canada – BlackBerry smartphone maker Research in
Motion (RIM) (NASD: RIMM) announced on Thursday that it has acquired The Astonishing Tribe,
a Sweden-based developer of user interface technology.
Financial terms of the
transaction were not disclosed.
"TAT is renowned for their innovative
mobile user interface (UI) designs and has a long history of working with mobile
and embedded technology," said RIM chief technology officer David Yach.
"TAT focuses on delivering great user experiences, from a design, technology,
and usability perspective. Their design technology is used today in a variety
of industries including the consumer electronics and automotive sectors."
TAT offers a custom home screen for Android-powered devices, and says its user
interface technology shipped on more than 20% of all touch-screen mobile phones
in 2010.
