Taoyuan, Taiwan – Mobile phone manufacturer HTC announced on
Tuesday that it has invested $40 million in OnLive, the provider of an
on-demand video game streaming service.

Palo Alto, Calif.-based OnLive operates
a cloud-based service that streams video game content in real-time to PCs and
televisions.

"Video games are the most popular mobile app category,
despite the relatively limited performance of mobile devices.   OnLive’s cloud gaming technology will
turbo-charge HTC mobile devices with directly playable console-class video game
performance," said OnLive founder and CEO Steve Perlman.

"HTC and
OnLive share a similar goal for expanding connected cloud-based gaming by
making it wireless and location-independent," added HTC CEO Peter Chou.

Other
backers of OnLive include Warner Bros., AT&T, BT and Maverick Capital.
