Washington – LivingSocial, the social shopping firm that
operates its Daily Deals service in more than 200 markets, by midday Friday had
raised nearly $2 million to aid relief efforts in Japan through a nationwide
matching campaign.

The company sent emails to subscribers on Thursday, offering
to match each $5 donation to the American Red Cross.

The organization will use
the funds for its Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami fund.

"We talk
about the power of the LivingSocial platform for merchants all the time,"
said CEO Tim O’Shaughnessy.

"We have an opportunity to leverage the power
of our 24 million members by matching their contributions to make a difference
for those in need in Japan."

The Red Cross has already made a $10 million
commitment to the Japanese Red Cross for the response, and expects in the
coming weeks to make additional contributions to support humanitarian efforts.
