Los Angeles – The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers
(ICANN) has given final approval to the creation of a controversial .xxx
top-level domain, intended to become a home for adult content websites.

ICM
Registry first proposed the creation of an .xxx domain in 2000, and again in
2005, but those efforts failed — as did another effort in 2007.

Last year, the
domain proposal received preliminary approval in June, and over the weekend
ICANN gave its final approval.

ICM Registry will manage the .xxx top-level
domain, which will be limited to companies in the adult entertainment industry.

Early registrations will be offered to sites that own a .com site they wish to
register under .xxx.
