New York – Payfone, the provider of a mobile payments
platform, announced on Wednesday that it has closed a new $19 million funding
round, led by American Express.

Verizon Investments, Rogers Ventures and
existing backers Opus Capital, BlackBerry Partners Fund and RRE Ventures also
participated.

Founded in 2008, New York-based Payfone offers a mobile checkout
and in-app payments service, allowing for authorized credit card, debit and
mobile operator-billed payments.

The company will help power the mobile
payments segment of investor American Express’ new digital payments platform,
Serve.

Payfone said it will use the funds for additional product development,
and to support expansion across North America, Latin America, Asia, Europe, the
Middle East and Africa.
