San Francisco – Apple, Google and likely other cell phone
software makers collect location data on users to improve mapping, navigation
and targeted advertising services, The New York Times reports. Apple explained
in a letter to lawmakers in July that it collects location data to update its
location databases, which it said "must be updated continuously."
Security researchers told The Times Apple "should have been more diligent
about encrypting the [location] file and deleting old data."
