Google has acquired the popular Mac email client Sparrow and its small development team. It will be incorporated into Gmail, which currently provides Mac users with an iPhone product that general consensus indicates is in need of improvement.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Sparrow is available on its own as a $10 app, and was recently on special discount for $5. Dom Leca, CEO of Sparrow, said it will continue to support existing Sparrow customers. Further development of the app is unlikely, however.

“We care a lot about how people communicate, and we did our best to provide you with the most intuitive and pleasurable mailing experience,” Leca said on the company’s site. “Now we’re joining the Gmail team to accomplish a bigger vision — one that we think we can better achieve with Google.”
