Mountain View, Calif. – Google (NASD: GOOG) announced on Friday that
China has renewed the company’s license to operate its search engine in the
country, easing what lately has been a tense relationship, where Google at one
point had even indicated it might exit the country entirely. "We are very
pleased that the government has renewed our ICP license and we look forward to
continuing to provide web search and local products to our users in
China," Google wrote in a blog post.
The company had been re-directing
mainland Chinese search traffic to its Hong Kong site, which had upset the
Chinese government.
Google’s recent decision to cease this automatic forwarding
of Web traffic appears to have played a role in the new license approval.
