New York – The open-source, privacy-minded Diaspora online
social network is set to launch on Sept. 15, the company said in a blog post.
The four New York University students who founded the company did so in
reaction to complaints from consumers and regulators about privacy issues on
Facebook.
The venture has thus far raised $200,000 in funding via crowdsourced
service Kickstarter, with donations coming from individuals reportedly
including Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.
The company says in the blog post
that it has been focused on "contextual sharing," its term for "an
intuitive way for users to decide, and not notice deciding, what content goes
to their coworkers and what goes to their drinking buddies."
