Santa Monica, Calif. – Video game publisher Activision (NASD: ATVI), a
unit of Vivendi, said this week that its "Call of Duty: Black Ops"
game has become "the biggest entertainment launch ever," with
estimated first-day sales of $360 million in North American and the U.K. On
Nov. 9, the game sold 5.6 million copies in North America and the U.K.; the
game’s previous iteration, "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2," sold 4.7
million copies on its first day.
The franchise counts over 25 million players
worldwide.
"There has never been another entertainment franchise
that has set opening day records for two consecutive years and we are on track
to outperform last year’s five-day global sales record of $550 million,"
said Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick.
