New York – Joshua Topolsky, the editor of AOL’s (NYSE: AOL) popular
Engadget technology blog, will depart the company, several weeks after engaging
in a public war of words with Michael Arrington, the editor of AOL’s newly
acquired blog, TechCrunch. Nilay Patel, Engadget’s managing editor, also is
departing, with Josh Fruhlinger, the blog’s editorial director, expected to
take on a larger role during the transition.
"After nearly four years at
Engadget, it’s time to make my exit," wrote Topolsky.
"There are
things I’m after and challenges I want to take on that just don’t fit with my
day-to-day schedule here, so off I go."
All Things D reported that the
departures were unrelated to AOL’s recent $315 million acquisition of The
Huffington Post, and that Arianna Huffington, AOL’s new content head, tried to
persuade Topolsky to stay.
Arrington in February accused Engadget of having a
"major attribution problem," tending to "just steal
stories," and alleged that Topolsky had personally tried to kill AOL’s
acquisition of TechCrunch.
Engadget reportedly draws 14 million monthly unique
visitors.
