Seattle – Amazon.com (NASD: AMZN) is preparing to launch a new tablet
computer that will feature an E Ink touchscreen display, and has placed orders
with Taiwan-based manufacturer Quanta Computer, DigiTimes reported.
The device
is expected to begin shipping as early as the second half of 2011, with
manufacturing slated to reach up to 800,000 units per month.
Quanta also
manufactures Research in Motion’s BlackBerry PlayBook, and is reported to be
the vendor chosen to make Sony’s forthcoming line of tablets.
DigiTimes’
sources said Amazon plans to cut the price of the Kindle in a bid to attract
education and consumer markets, while marketing the new tablet as a competitor
to Apple’s iPad.
