Anonymous, the infamous hacker group that has been connected to a number of cyber attacks, appears to be the source of a statement vowing to “kill Facebook” on Nov. 5.
Earlier today the hackivist group confirmed via Twitter that only some of its members are organizing the upcoming attack against Facebook, citing users’ lack of privacy as the reason.
“Everything you do on Facebook stays on Facebook regardless of your ‘privacy’ settings, and deleting your account is impossible, even if you “delete” your account, all your personal info stays on Facebook and can be recovered at any time. Changing the privacy settings to make your Facebook account more “private” is also a delusion. Facebook knows more about you than your family,” the letter read.
The group often targets websites related to law enforcement, governments and other agencies it perceives as a threat to personal freedoms. The chosen date of the purported Facebook attack, Nov. 5, is known in the U.K. as Guy Fawkes Night. It commemorates the 1605 failure of the Gunpowder Plot, in which Guy Fawkes was to have blown up the House of Lords to assassinate King James I of England and other members of the ruling class.
Anonymous said earlier this summer its intention to create its own social network called AnonPlus, which it promised would put privacy in the hands of the individual users.
The group released a video on YouTube outlining its reason for planning to attack the world’s largest social network.
