Transmedia entertainment producer Mark Burnett and actor Roma Downey, who in real life are married, have partnered with Immersion Digital’s Glo Bible and HarperCollins’s Christian publisher Zondervan on Bible360, a free app that melds the religious text together with HD videos, high-resolution images, articles, 360-degree virtual tours and social media.
The app, which will offer a premium upgrade in the future, will serve as a companion to the 2013 History Channel series based on the stories of the Bible, which Burnett described as the “most important project I have ever undertaken.” The ten-part series was conceived by Downey and Burnett (pictured) and will be produced by Lightworkers Media and Hearst Entertainment & Syndication.
Social features of Bible360 include the ability to share Bible verses, photos and other elements via social networking channels and LifeChurch.tv’s social platform YouVersion. The entire Bible and related media can be sorted, searched and organized by geography, timeline, media type and topic. Other features include a personal journal and reading plans.
Burnett has a slate of highly successful television programs to his name, including The Voice, The Apprentice, Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? and Survivor. Downey is best known for her starring role in Touched by an Angel, which was a nine-year hit for CBS.
“With Bible360, people everywhere now have the ability to explore Biblical History in an insightful, accessible and immersive way,” Burnett and Downey said in a joint statement. “We are thrilled to provide millions of people with a fresh visual experience as they enjoy this sacred text.”
