iPad Hacker Daniel Spitler Pleads Guilty in AT&T Breach

0

Dallas, TexasDaniel Spitler, one of the two men charged in the AT&T iPad e-mail hacker breach last year, has pleaded guilty to charges in New Jersey and Texas on Friday.

Charged with two felony counts, prosecutors are recommending that he spend 12 to 18 months in prison per his plea agreement. However, Spitler can still face up to 10 years in prison if the judge decides.

Spitler and Andrew Auernheimer were both arrested in June 2010 after they wrote a script that guessed the ICC-ID numbers (used to identify an iPad’s SIM card) and then queried AT&T’s website until it returned e-mail addresses, including those of members of the military, politicians and business leaders such as New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.

Prosecutors are still working out a plea agreement with Auernheimer.

Apple Files Lawsuit Against Samsung in South Korea

0

San Jose, Calif. — Apple Corp (NASD:AAPL) filed a lawsuit Friday against Samsung Electronics Co Ltd  in South Korea claiming the company infringed on several of their patents, as reported by Reuters.

Samsung allegedly “slavishly” copied Apple’s iPhone with their new Galaxy line of mobile smartphones.

The lawsuit comes just months after Apple filed a similar lawsuit against Samsung in the U.S. for the same patent claims. Last week a federal court judge asked the two companies to solve their problems outside of court, noting their past close relationship.

“It is no coincidence that Samsung’s latest products look a lot like the iPhone and iPad from the shape of the hardware to the user interface and even the packaging,” a spokesman for Apple in Korea said.

Samsung has yet to comment on the lawsuit.

Facebook Reaches 750 Million Active Monthly Users

0

Palo Alto, Calif. — Facebook is now home to over 750 million active monthly users, TechCrunch reported, citing sources close to the company.

The multi-billion dollar social networking company counted 687 million users earlier this month.

A spokesperson for the company said Friday that they had nothing to announce at this time. It is believed that the company is waiting until they reach 1 billion users before officially announcing an update to their active user number.

The last time Facebook made an official announcement about their active user base was in July 2004 when they reached 500 million monthly users.

"Team Fortress 2" Goes Free To Play

0

Bellevue, Wash. — Valve, the creator of best-selling game franchises such as Half-Life, Portal, Left 4 Dead, and Counter-Strike and digital distribution platform Steam, announced on Friday that their “Team Fortress 2” game will now be free to play and download.

The company will earn revenue through player in-game interaction and will be played as a “freemium” mode — allowing users to play the game while encouraging them to purchase more powerful features.

“All game modes, classes, and maps are available. Nearly every weapon is available through achievements, drops, or crafting,” said the company in the announcement.

“Team Fortress” was a part of the Orange Box collection Valve released in 2007, including “Half Life 2,” its sequels and “Portal.” The now free to play game was claimed as being a large factor in Valve’s Orange Box success.

Google Facing Antitrust Investigation of Search-Ad Business

0

Mountain View, Calif. — Google (NASD:GOOG) is in the midst of a Federal antitrust investigation into whether it has abused its dominance in the search-advertising business  that could be as big as we have seen since the federal government’s antitrust battle with Microsoft Corp (NASD:MSFT) in the 1990s, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The investigations, which started on Thursday in California, come just after the Wall Street Journal reported Google was about to receive a subpoena from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FCC) as part of a probe into the company’s Internet search business.

This isn’t the first time Google has received complaints from rival companies, as U.S. antitrust regulators have been concerned for some time about Google’s dominance in the web search industry.

While it is too early to tell if the investigations will rise to level of the Fed’s legal fight with Microsoft in the 1990s, Google has ramped up its presence in Washington, DC over the past few years, spending over $7 Million on lobbying in 2010 according to the Center for Responsive Politics and employing 30 Washington staffers and a team outside consultants and lobbyists, a sign that it is not taking this matter lightly.

“The distraction that comes from a federal investigation should not be underestimated,” commented Colin Gillis of BGC Partners, as reported by Reuters.

Report: Popularity of Tablets to Decrease Other Device Sales

0

Dallas, Texas — Parks Associates, a research and analysis company, reported Thursday that nearly six million U.S. broadbrand households intend to purchase a tablet, while another four million who had no previous intentions to purchase a computer this year are now inspired to do so.

The report reveals the risk of lost sales to other electronic devices, including netbooks, e-readers, notebooks and even newspaper companies.

“One year after the launch of the Apple iPad, tablet adoption reached 13% of U.S. broadband households (approximately 10.5 million households), slightly below current netbook and e-reader adoption rates,” said Jennifer Kent, a Parks Associates’ mobile research analyst. “Mass adoption of tablets depends on consumers’ ability to differentiate them from similar CE, and devices that overlap with the tablet will struggle to remain relevant.”

Parks Associates estimates that nearly 16.8 million tablets will be sold worldwide in 2010.

CNET Report: Top ISPs to Join Content Industry Anti-Piracy Efforts

0

San Francisco, Calif. — Customers who refuse to stop using the networks operated by  internet service providers  (ISPs) to engage in piracy may soon face tougher punishments starting as soon as next month, CNET reported, citing multiple sources.

A group of top ISPs, including AT&T, Comcast and Verizon, are discussing an agreement with media and entertainment companies represented by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the Modern Picture Association of America (MPAA) that would put in place new and tougher punishments for customers who use their networks to pirate movies, music and other intellectual property.

After years of trying to persuade ISPs to take a tougher stance on piracy, the RIAA and MPAA are close to an agreement where participating service providers would adopt a “graduated response” to users who continue to infringe copyrights. If a person is identified as sharing media illegally, bandwidth providers would first issue a written warning, called a Copyright Alert. If a  subscriber does not stop the infringing activity, service providers can either continue sending notices or take harsher actions — including slowing down a customer’s bandwidth speed, limiting them to only 100 top websites to even terminating their service, which isn’t required under the proposed plan.

The piracy plan could be one of the most “potent antipiracy strategies ever implemented,” CNET reported.
