Fremont,
Calif. – Spring Design on Wednesday
began shipping its Alex eReader, an Android-based e-book reader device that
costs $399.
The dual-screen device features Wi-Fi connectivity at launch, and
later this year will add support for 3G and EVDO/CDMA. One screen on the device
is the e-book EPD screen, while the other is an LCD that supports video
playback and Web surfing.
Spring Design said it would soon announce
multi-language versions of Alex for countries speaking Chinese, Spanish,
Russian, Korean and Hebrew.
The company partnered with Grammata to sell the
Alex eReader in Spain
online and in retail stores, starting in July.
Grammata is digitizing books
from Spanish publishers and expects to offer 15,000 to 45,000 Spanish-language
e-books for sale.
