Washington
– The rate of global software piracy climbed to 43% last year, up 2% from 2008,
fueled by expanding PC sales in emerging markets, according to a new report
from the Business Software Alliance (BSA).

The figures mean that for every $100
worth of legitimate software sold in 2009, an additional $75 worth of
unlicensed software also made its way into the market.

All told, the
organization said that software theft exceeded $51 billion in commercial value
last year.

In the U.S.,
software piracy remained at 20%, the lowest level of software theft of any
nation.
