London
– The BBC has been given the green light to proceed with Project Canvas, an
Internet video-on-demand joint venture that will offer programs from
broadcasters including ITV, Channel 4, Five and the BBC.

The BBC Trust has
authorized creation of the joint venture, which will also include ISPs Talk
Talk and BT, and infrastructure provider Arqiva.

The partners will work to develop
a user interface for set-top boxes and TVs that will deliver programming over
the Internet to televisions.

The Canvas project is forecast to cost about £115.6
million ($173.9 million) over five years; the BBC is expected to contribute at
least £24.7 million ($37.2 million) of this sum.
